Who runs Country Guessing

Country Guessing is a free hobby project, not a company. It's made by github.com/murrrda, where you can find how to get in touch.

What Country Guessing stores

• A guest account. On your first visit Country Guessing creates an account with a random ID and a random name, such as "Misty Nomad #1347". There's no sign-up form and it doesn't ask for your name or email.
• Your games. For each Daily: the countries you guessed, in order, when you started and finished, and whether you solved it or gave up. For each Beat the Clock run: the countries, guesses, points and times. This is what your streak, stats, passport and leaderboard places are worked out from.
• Your Google account ID, if you sign in with Google. Signing in is optional. It lets you keep the same progress on more than one device. Country Guessing keeps only the ID number Google gives it for your account, to recognise you next time. It doesn't keep your email address, name or photo.
• The name you choose, and your badge. Once signed in, you can replace the random name with one you choose (once, for good), and wear a country from your passport as a badge.
• Your friends. Once you've chosen a name, you get a friend link with a random code in it. When someone opens it and adds you, Country Guessing stores that you're friends, and when.

Practice games stay in your browser and aren't sent anywhere.

Moving from boostln.com. The game used to live at boostln.com. If you open the old address, it asks for a one-time code that links to your account, and passes it to countryguessing.com so you keep your progress. The code works once, stops working after two minutes, and is then deleted.

What's stored in your browser

Country Guessing doesn't use cookies. It keeps a few things in your browser's local storage: a signed login token, so it knows which account is yours, the ID of a Beat the Clock run that's still going, and whether you last looked at the Everyone or the Friends leaderboard. For the length of a visit only, it also remembers a friend link you opened and whether you've just signed in. Clearing your browser's site data removes all of this. Unless you've signed in with Google, you then start again as a new guest.

What other players can see

Leaderboards show your name (the random guest name, or the one you chose) and your badge, with your guesses and time (Daily) or points (Beat the Clock). Nothing else about you is shown to other players. Your chosen name is public, so don't use your real name unless you're happy for others to see it.

Your friends can also see you on the Friends leaderboard, and they can open your passport: the countries you've found, and for each Daily you solved, your guesses and time. Anything you found today is left out until the next day. Anyone who has your friend link can add you, so share it with people you'd like to play with. You can remove a friend at any time from their passport page, and they then lose access to yours.

When you share a result or a friend link, the link's preview (the card that chat apps like Instagram or WhatsApp show) includes your chosen name, if you have one, and how many guesses you took on that Daily. It never shows the country. The chat app fetches that preview from Country Guessing when the link is posted.

Services Country Guessing uses

• Cloudflare hosts the site and its database. Like any web host, it handles your IP address to deliver the pages and to limit how many requests one visitor can make. Country Guessing itself doesn't store IP addresses. Cloudflare's privacy policy.
• Google Fonts supplies the typeface, so your browser downloads it from Google. Google's privacy policy.
• Google Sign-In is used only if you choose to sign in with Google.

How long it's kept, and deleting it

Your account and games are kept for as long as the account exists, because streaks and the passport are built from your whole history. To delete everything, open the game, scroll to Your stats under the Daily, and choose Delete my data. This removes your account, all your games, your friends list and your leaderboard places straight away, and it can't be undone.

Your rights

You can see your data in the game (stats, passport, leaderboards) and delete it yourself as described above. For anything else about your data, get in touch through the GitHub profile above.

Changes

If Country Guessing starts storing anything new, this page will be updated first, with a new date at the top.
